Tentative project description

The idea is to make an application which enables joggers to log their movement when they are jogging a route. The log can be used to visualize the route on a map along with statistics like number of kilometers and average speed. In addition, the statistics can be compared with previous statistics from the same route, making it possible to see if some improvements have been made.

Another use of the log is to share it with other joggers by uploading it to a central server. Thus, joggers around the world can cooperate with each other and find the best routes. The routes can be placed on a map, enabling joggers to find routes in the area where they live. Furthermore, statistics from jogging the routes can be shared, and used to compare and compete with other joggers. The statistics can also help joggers find a route that is appropriate according to their fitness level and the time available for jogging.

Assignment 2 – Mobile Phones

Give a short overview of the development and deployment of mobile phones and mobile services. Have the mobile markets developed differently in different parts of the world? Use your preferred search engine to find appropriate online sources, and refer to these in the text.

Mobile phones started being used mainly for calling and talking with other people, but it uses has evolved tremendously. The first real change happened with the introduction of Short Message Service (SMS) in the early 90s. SMS enabled people to send text messages to each other instead of talking, and become extremely popular in Europe, Asia and Australia. The second change happened with the introduction of Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) and incorporation of cameras in mobile phones. MMS addressed limitations of SMS, and enabled people to send pictures and sounds as well as text. As a result, mobile users could share pictures taken with the mobile phone with others. The third change is probably happening now with the introduction of UMTS.

The mobile phone market is big and has had a tremendous growth over the past 10 years. It is especially big in Europe, Japan, Taiwan and Korea, and a great part of the population in those areas has mobile phones. In Norway, for example, there is over one mobile phone per inhabitant. Still, further growth is expected since the mobile phone market is growing in several of the most populated countries in the world. This includes countries like China, India and Brazil.

Give a short overview of how you think mobile phones and mobile services will develop in the next five years.
I think mobile phones will just keep replacing other devices by incorapting these in the phone in such a way that one has only one device to carry around. It will probably include a mp3 player, camera, mobile phone, e-reader, watch, GPS and DVD player.

The mobile phones will also get more powerful along with greater speed for transferring data between devices. These two factors will enable a whole range of services not possible today. I have a hard time picturing what types of services that will be offered. However, I am pretty sure they will become a very important part of our lives.
